About Us

Established in 2001 by Joan Huang and Jeffrey Gou, Cherry Sky Films was founded to develop, produce, and co-finance independent films for international audiences. Cherry Sky Films also aims to work with both emerging and established Asian and Asian American filmmakers and talent to bring more varied and in-depth roles and projects to the screen.

During the first decade of the new millennium, Cherry Sky Films produced and co-produced several critically-acclaimed independent films/documentaries which have premiered and sold at Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca, and other top film festivals. BETTER LUCK TOMORROW, directed by Justin Lin, was acquired by MTV Films at its 2002 Sundance debut, and its opening weekend in April 2003 garnered the highest-grossing film per screen. IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL, a feature documentary directed by Academy Award winning documentary filmmaker Jessica Yu, was nominated for an Emmy, a Gotham Award, and was short-listed for an Academy Award. TO YOU SWEETHEART, ALOHA, a feature documentary about 94 year old 'ukelele legend Bill Tapia, received the Audience Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. FINISHING THE GAME, Cherry Sky's third collaboration with Justin Lin, premiered at Sundance in 2007 and was released theatrically in fall 2007. Jessica Yu's narrative feature debut PING PONG PLAYA premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2007 and was released theatrically by IFC Films in Fall 2008. The Emmy nominated documentary about three remarkable stories linking strangers across decades, cultures, and continents., A SMALL ACT, directed by Jennifer Arnold, premiered at Sundance 2010 and then on HBO.

Recent projects include DIRTY GIRL, written and directed by Abe Sylvia and starring Juno Temple, Milla Jovovich, William H. Macy, Tim McGraw, and Mary Steenburgen, sold to the Weinstein Company at its Toronto Film Festival premiere, and PUNCTURE starring Chris Evans from the producing-directing brothers Mark and Adam Kassen, both released theatrically in 2011.

Cherry Sky Films also works with emerging filmmakers through a number of short film projects. Before there was Youtube or iPhones, the SKYPOD SHORTS brought six different filmmakers together to write, shoot and edit short films with one common theme: the iPod. THE VENOM SPORTSWEAR AD CAMPAIGN featured a series of faux-documentary sports ads created for a real-life Asian American sportswear line and was the inspiration for PING PONG PLAYA. Most recently, Cherry Sky Films teamed up with new-media company 5432 Films for the short web series MEGABOT and also produced the short film CRUSH THE SKULL, winner of the 6th Annual NBC-Universal Shortcuts Festival.

Currently, Cherry Sky Films has several projects in various stages of development, production, or distribution. On the narrative front, CALIFORNIA SOLO, written and directed by Marshall Lewy, premieres at Sundance 2012. On the documentary front is AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY, a feature documentary about the life and work of activist Grace Lee Boggs by award-winning filmmaker Grace Lee.

Internationally, Cherry Sky Films has a co-production slate with Taiwan's Serenity Entertainment International to produce commercial independent films in Asia for worldwide audiences.
